Trekking with Mao
Touched feeling in every single moment
My best friend once told me “I will come to Vietnam to see Sapa. I want to see the incredible art that humans have created in nature – the rice terrace.”
Even if you’ve heard of the astonishing beauty of Sapa, you will be touched at the moment you reach it. Your mind will find peace and relaxation in this wonderful stress-free place. You’re sure to find serenity while trekking the ornate rolling foothills of Sapa.
If you’re looking for a secluded adventure, away from the hustle and bustle of tourists, come join a local trek with Mao. She’s a member of the H’Mong minority who knows Sapa better than anyone. Her knowledge of local customs and culture will make for an unforgettable experience!
Sapa with Mao itinerary
8.30- 9.15pm: The bus company pick you up from our hostel, or the hostel where you have chosen pick up (note, please be ready by 8.30 in case you are the first pick up).
9.30-10pm: Bus leaves Ha Noi
4am: Bus arrives in Sapa. You can stay sleeping on the bus for 2 hours or so.
6am: Alight from bus. Can check out the market opposite if you like.
6:30 – 7 am: Guide will meet you at the bus drop off point at about this time, and then take you for breakfast
[note, if you travel by train, someone will pick you up from the station – they will have your name and be looking for you-and take you to the cathedral/church in Sapa, where the guide will meet you and take you for breakfast. If she is picking up from both she will be late for one of you, so please be patient].
9am: Start trekking, remembering to ensure you have bought enough water for the day. You will rest when you like and have lunch on the way as well.
In the afternoon sometime (depending on how many times you stopped to rest), you will arrive at the homestay. You can meet the family, and see how the rural life is. You can get involved with cooking dinner (including catching and preparing the chicken if you want).
Have the home cooked evening meal (vegetarian etc. catered for). You will be definitely offered rice wine by Mao!
[note, if you are staying 2 nights or more in the homestay you will go on a long circular walk on the second/other day. You will decide in the morning if you want this to be easy, medium or hard. Be warned, those little mountain ladies can hike!]
If you stay only 1 night in Homestay, you will wake, shower (she can provide towels, but please do bring your own if you can as she won’t have enough for all). You will have breakfast and then start to trek back towards Sapa, having lunch en route.
You will arrive in Sapa at 3.30pm or so. There is a bus at 4pm, so if you are booked on that you will head back to Ha Noi then. If you are booked on the 10pm bus you will have free time to explore Sapa.
[Note, if you are going back by train you will take the transfer back to Lao Cai to the station. The last transfer is 5pm from the church/cathedral].
If you stay 2 nights in Homestay,
You will join the longer trekking to other village, admire more local area, different ethnic groups in Sapa, and stay in other village in further mountain.
The next day morning, you can have shower and have breakfast, before trekking back to Sapa town.
Arrival back to Hanoi
The 4pm bus arrives about 10.30 pm. The 10pm bus arrives about 4am. The train arrives around 5am.
The tour finishes where the bus drops you off (on the main road just east of Hoan Kiem lake, or at the train station.
Please walk away a bit from where the drop off is to get a taxi, as night time drivers massively overcharge. Good taxi companies are Mai Linh (Green taxi) and Taxigroup.
We can organise whatever tour you’d like as well, even if you’d rather the comfort of a hotel. Sapa has some of Vietnam most luxury hotels as well as more affordable beds for a fraction of the price.
For the option staying in the hotel, you will have shorter trek with easier way in more popular area in Sapa.
You might see the decent waterfall in Cat Cat village with about 3 km trekking away from Sapa town, and then come back to the hotel in Sapa town for staying overnight.
And with this option, you can consider between 2 star hotel (which is quite basic in the little town standard) or 3 star hotel (which is in nicer condition or in nicer view of Sapa)
Get in touch through the contact form below so we can tell you more about what options you have on offer.
The transfers from Hanoi to Sapa and back Sapa to Hanoi are included in the trekking package.
You can choose between sleeping bus (day or overnight bus) or sleeping train to Sapa.

As an alone French traveler I stayed at See You at Lily’s hostel for a total of 3 days. What I liked the most is this true kindness from the crew. Very welcoming, and with a true smile on the face.
I planed with them my whole trip to Halong Bay and Sapa very quickly, and theses two trips were perfectly organized !
The room I was in was quite big and very clean, just like the shower. Every day there is someone coming to clean and arrange your room.
If you need a taxi to go anywhere around you can tell them to order one for you. They even booked my plane back to Ho Chi Minh for me !…
I had landed in the wee hours of the morning and went to a crappy hostel not far from See You At Lily’s. After a really bad sleep, I walked around a found this little diamond in the rough. Rez moved quickly to get me settled in an amazing private room – I sent photos to my friends at home and they were amazed that it was a hostel as it looks and feels like a 4* hotel but for a fraction of the price. Rez organised a homestay in Sapa (which was amazing!! Highly recommend it) and a Ha Long Bay cruise and nights stay, which I’d also recommend. Within an hour I was feeling fresh, had had a laugh with the staff, had booked two tours and was given a map of the city with highlights of what I wanted to see and do, and especially where to eat…Simsoh
Stayed in See You At Lily’s on two occasions in Hanoi. On both occasions staff were extremely helpful in booking trips for us- Halong bay Fantesea Cruise, Tam Coc day trip with Wali and Sapa with Mao and her family. All trips were fantastic, especially the Sapa trip with Mao. This trip was 3 days and 2 nighfs, price includes buses, treking, food and accommodation at Mao’s home. Mao and her family were so kind, friendly, generous, funny and happy and the scenery was so beautiful. It is the best 3days I have had after 3 weeks in Vietnam!!! I’d recommend this trip to anyone!Ali A
